There have been some great Doctor Who toys, gifts and collectible merchandise available virtually as long as there have been adventures for Doctor Who. Over time there have been some quite classic memorable Doctor Who toys and merchandise, such as the famous 1960s Dalek costumes for youngsters, and a few that haven’t been quite so good (the Dapol figures could come back to mind). Fortunately, with the endless huge popularity of Doctor Who toys, merchandise and DVDs, the phenomenon appears well set to be on the market for a good long time in the future.

Well this is good. I’ve personally loved Doctor Who for around twenty years, and was elated when it came back onto our television screens back in 2005. Certainly, there have been a few less than marvellous episodes since it came back, however these are fortunately few. Christopher Eccleston’s ninth Doctor brought the series back in style, but it was the arrival of David Tennant’s tenth Doctor that basically saw the show become an international phenomenom.

It’s currently bigger than it ever was during the first 1963-1989 run, and since it came back it has brought together some of the finest talent the British TV and film trade has to offer, both behind and in front of the camera. The line of Doctor Who toys at this time on offer is wide and quite amazing for enthusiasts young and old, who now have a large selection of toys, games, posters, statues and more to choose from to expand their Doctor Who toys collection.

And, at this time that the age of the eleventh Doctor is here, ushering in Matt Smith within the lead role as our famous Time Lord, everything alters again and a whole new series of Doctor Who collectibles is being revealed, with the new logo, the new version of the Doctor, his new companion, the new version of the TARDIS and a new rogue’s gallery of monsters and villains!

The return of Doctor Who took old fans by surprise, however it had been the sheer enormity of its popularity that has stunned everybody even more. At the moment there are Doctor Who toys, gifts, merchandise and collectables on offer at all good stores and on all of the top sites on-line, and therefore the series will carry on changing and growing. Just like the Time Lord himself, Doctor Who toys, gifts and merchandise keeps on coming back!

So finally the eleventh Doctor is here, debuting properly together with his first full Doctor Who episode, ‘The Eleventh Hour’ over the Easter holiday within the UK. The hour-long primary episode of Doctor Who series 5 was written by new series runner Steven Moffat, and if it is a nice instance of what’s to follow with this sequence, then followers of the longest running sfTV show in history are in for an incredible ride. Matt Smith is immediately likeable as the Doctor, who, despite his youth, carries with him quite a lot of that all-essential genius and gravitas that the character all the time needs.

He’s immediately into the part, and commands every scene he is in. Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan, is going to take a little more getting used to, and I am already sick of everybody going on about just how attractive she is. With any luck the main target will shift to her acting and the tales as soon as she’s not running around in a kinky policewoman’s uniform. This primary tale within the new Doctor Who series is a fairly regular earthbound SF tale, but it is in how things are brought to a head that the fantastic thing about Moffat’s writing lies.

The way wherein the Doctor triumphs over the latest risk, and rescues the planet in simply 20 minutes, is brilliant. The episode is beautifully put together, and whereas the effects are slightly unwieldly sometimes, it is possibly the most effective ‘New Doctor’ episode we’ve had since the series got here again in 2005.

The direction and editing are great, but the music is not ideal in a number of places, most particularly the latest version of the famous  Doctor Who theme tune. I did enjoythe brand new title sequence however. The latest TARDIS is superb, the new Doctor is very promising and Amy exhibits promise. In all, it is a fantastic begin to what’s going to with a bit of luck be a meaningful series of this real institution of genre television.

Matt Smith debuts as the Eleventh Doctor in the BBC TV series Doctor Who with companion Amy Pond played by Karen Gillan. The first Doctor Who episode of the new series is written by Steven Moffat.

Doctor Who: The End of Time Part 1 Review

doctor-who-end-of-timeDavid Tennant’s final story has begun! Doctor Who: The End of Time Part One was screened yesterday on Christmas day, and has opened up a huge debate in Doctor Who fandom. opinion is split on the episode, with some people loving it and some hating it. We’re somewhere in the middle. It wasn’t classic, but it wasn’t bad. Following on from ‘The Waters of Mars’, which was incredible, ‘The End of Time Part One’ seems a little lacklustre.

This may well be down to it just being one half of the whole story, though. On its won it doesn’t work all that great, but in the larger scheme of things I’m sure it will all slot into place. The return of the Master (John Simm) is something that works really well in the episode. Despite his corny resurrection, his character is much more demented and much more evil this time, along with shocking audiences with his bizarre super powers that allow him to fly and shoot bolts of energy from his hands.

It’s a little disjointed as episodes go, and not really the huge event we were all hoping for, but hopefully the second part will deliver on all those rumours and all of the hype. Of course, everything is set in motion now and the next part, to be shown in the UK on New Year’s Day, should hopefully give the tenth Doctor a proper farewell.

The story is pretty standard earth-based Doctor Who fare, but there’s much to enjoy, such as the ‘cameo’ by Barack Obama (a lookalike and a voice clip), David Tennant’s masterful and rather introspective performance, and some great effects. It doesn’t feel very ‘epic’ until the final couple of minutes, which are ridiculous. it’ll take another viewing or two before the ending sinks in, and we’re all waiting to see just how it is all resolved… especially now that the Time Lords are back!
